Zelenskyy Braces for Extended Conflict Amidst Wavering Western Support

In a sobering revelation, Ukraine's President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has expressed his readiness, both mentally and strategically, for a prolonged conflict with Russia. Speaking to The Economist, the leader candidly remarked, "I have to be ready, my team has to be ready for the long war, and emotionally I am ready."

While last year's meetings reverberated with optimism, given Ukraine's successful resistance against Russian advancements in the Kharkiv region, this year's tone starkly contrasts. Despite a three-month counter-offensive, Ukrainian forces have made limited progress in the strategic Zaporizhia region, an area crucial in blocking Russia's territorial link from mainland Russia to Crimea.

Despite repeated assurances from Western allies about unwavering support, Zelenskyy has sensed a palpable shift in commitment. "I have this intuition... I see that he or she is not here, not with us," the President remarked, indicating the potential waning confidence amongst some of his international partners.

In a direct challenge to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Zelenskyy highlighted the vulnerabilities of Russia, arguing that Putin "doesn't understand that he will lose in a long war." He pointed to the Russian economy's inherent frailty as a weak point, regardless of Putin's approval ratings among his populace.

As the conflict intensifies, Zelenskyy remains armed, a stark reminder of the war's gravity. Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Defense Intelligence, described the Ukraine-Russia conflict as unprecedented, noting the utilization of all possible weaponry.

The unfolding situation suggests Ukraine is settling into a protracted phase of the war. The length of this phase, much like the ultimate outcome, remains uncertain.
