The archaeological complex of Raqchi, situated 119 kilometers from the city of Cusco in the district of San Pedro, province of Canchis, is an area rich in history and cultural significance. Boasting immense structures erected by the Incas, Raqchi is perhaps best known for its most iconic construction, the Temple of Wiracocha.

Constructed during the reign of Inca Viracocha, Pachacutec, and Tupac Yupanqui in the 15th century, the bold walls of Raqchi were made of stone and adobe. Recently, however, ceramic remains belonging to pre-Inca cultures such as Marcavalle, Pucará, and Wari have been discovered in the area, shedding new light on its rich history.

As tourism continues to grow year by year, experts have divided the site into five distinct sectors: the Temple of Wiracocha, the Largest Incan Temple, warehouses, statue, enclosures, and water sources. The Temple of Wiracocha, the most famous construction in Raqchi, is named after the god Viracocha – the creator of the world according to many ancient Peruvian cultures. Standing over 14 meters tall, this temple is the tallest Inca structure discovered to date.

Visitors can reach this incredible destination by traveling south of Cusco, where they will find an array of cultural experiences and historical treasures. Recently, the District Municipality of San Pedro, led by Mayor Modesta Challco, launched the fifty-fifth edition of the International Folk Festival Raqchi 2023, featuring the presence of the Inca Nivardo Carrillo.

Adding to Raqchi's allure, the World Tourism Organization voted it the best tourist town in the world in 2022. With its stunning archaeological sites, rich history, and growing recognition in the global tourism industry, Raqchi offers a unique and unforgettable experience for travelers seeking to explore the wonders of Inca culture.
