Sony World Photography Award 2023: AI-generated image declared winner, but creator declines award
Boris Eldagsen / Could you tell this is not a real photograph?

The winner of the creative open category at the Sony World Photography Award, German artist Boris Eldagsen, has refused his prize after admitting his winning entry, Pseudomnesia: The Electrician, was an AI creation. Eldagsen used the image to test the competition and to raise awareness about the future of photography. The World Photography Organisation said they felt the entry met the criteria for the creative category and they welcomed the artist's wish for dialogue. Eldagsen suggested donating the prize to a photo festival in Ukraine, and photographer and blogger Feroz Khan supported Eldagsen's call for separate categories for AI images. The use of AI in photography has become a subject of debate, especially concerning deepfakes, with some viewing it as another tool in photography and others accusing AI of exploiting human creators.
