Latvia Raises Alarm over Potential Aggression from Belarus Amid Border Tensions

Amid a tense border situation, Guntis Pujats, the commander of the Latvian Border Guard, voiced concerns about a "possible aggression" from Belarus on Thursday. He pointed to the presence of more than just "regular" border guards on the Belarusian side, raising questions about the neighboring country's intentions.

The Latvian Border Guard is not only observing the situation at the border but also closely monitoring the rhetoric from Belarus and Russia. This monitoring encompasses developments concerning Russian mercenaries in Belarus and issues with illegal immigrants, backed by intelligence information on the situation across the border, according to the Latvian public broadcaster LSM.

The observations made by the border guards have led to fears of possible aggression, emphasized Pujats, who also assured that Latvian authorities are ready to defend the country's borders.

While not all details could be disclosed, Pujats pointed out that there are elements beyond the regular Belarusian border guards, without providing additional information.

In contrast, the situation on the border with Russia was described as "much calmer," with the majority of the threat now seemingly emanating from Belarus, Pujats reported.

Pujats also highlighted the use of modern technologies such as drones, helicopters, and satellite data in monitoring the situation. He expressed confidence in their preparedness, stating, "If the need arises, we have sufficient resources to counteract it."
