Google CEO warns society is unprepared for advancements in AI

Elon Musk and a group of experts have called for a halt to the training of large language models that are more powerful than GPT-4. They argue that such models could pose significant risks to society and humanity. Meanwhile, Google CEO Sundar Pichai has warned that society is not ready for the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, which could displace "knowledge workers" like writers, accountants, architects, and software engineers. Pichai suggested that AI will impact every product across every company and that it could cause harm by amplifying disinformation and fake news. Despite these concerns, Pichai remains optimistic because more people are worrying about the implications of AI.

Musk, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and others have called for a six-month pause in the development of AI systems that are more advanced than GPT-4. They want AI labs and independent experts to develop shared safety protocols that are audited and overseen by outside experts. The group's call for a pause comes after a report by Goldman Sachs, which claimed that AI could replace the equivalent of 300 million full-time jobs. The report also suggested that administrative and legal sectors will see the most significant impact.

The developments follow the public debut of GPT-4, a new large language model that powers ChatGPT of the chatbot developer OpenAI. GPT-4 can recognize text and images and solve complex problems with greater accuracy.
