AI Takes Center Stage at Facebook: What It Means for the Company's Future

Mark Zuckerberg’s infatuation with artificial intelligence has been drawing attention, with some analysts warning that Facebook might even change its name to MetAI due to the CEO’s new-found love for AI technology. Earlier this month, Facebook’s Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Bosworth, revealed that Zuckerberg and other top executives are now spending most of their time on AI.

This has raised concerns among some analysts, who remember how just 18 months ago, Zuckerberg placed a huge bet on the metaverse and even changed the company’s name to Meta. Bernstein analysts issued a warning after meeting with tech investors, suggesting that investors should keep an eye on Zuckerberg’s new-found love for AI.

Investors are still recovering from Facebook’s spending spree on the metaverse and are now hoping that the company will stay conservative on costs. Although the company has trimmed its capital expenditure plans a bit since October, they have been buying a lot of Nvidia chips that cost about $10,000 each to train new generative AI models.

The MetaAI research group used 2,048 Nvidia chips for five months to train a new suite of language models. Since October, when Facebook said it was investing more heavily in AI, Nvidia shares have more than doubled, while Facebook’s stock is up about 54%.

Facebook’s quarterly results are set to be released on April 26th, and Wall Street will be watching the company’s spending and investment plans closely. While some analysts are worried that Zuckerberg’s obsession with AI might be costly, others believe that AI could help Facebook’s core ads and social media business. Meta’s Chief Operating Officer, Javier Olivan, said at a recent Morgan Stanley conference that “It's machine learning algorithms, AI” that will help make ads more relevant to users.

In conclusion, while some analysts are wary of Facebook’s increased focus on AI, others believe that AI could help the company’s core business. It remains to be seen whether Zuckerberg’s obsession with AI will result in a costly venture or a profitable one, but one thing is clear: the world is rapidly moving towards an AI-powered future, and Facebook is determined to keep up with the competition.
